Planting the Seeds of STEM Learning

Spring is a season of growth, and thanks to community support, CCUSD students are experiencing hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) learning that nurtures curiosity and critical thinking beyond the traditional science standards.
Research shows that early exposure to STEM education strengthens problem-solving skills and prepares students for future careers. According to the U.S. Department of Education, hands-on STEM learning improves knowledge retention and encourages students to pursue science and technology fields. That’s why the Culver City Education Foundation (CCEF) is proud to fund Growing Great workshops that introduce every second grade student across CCUSD to real-world science through garden-based experiences.
These interactive lessons connect classroom concepts to everyday life. In one session, students dissect seeds to explore plant growth, while another lesson brings composting to life as students observe “wiggly worms” transforming food scraps into nutrient-rich soil. These activities align with California state science standards and engage students in critical thinking, experimentation, and discovery – foundational skills for future scientists, engineers, and environmental careers.
Ms. Shelly Rauschuber, second grade teacher at Farragut Elementary shared how much her students enjoy the visits from the Growing Great educator: “The ‘hands on’ lessons are engaging, thought provoking, and fit right in with our life science units. We have been recording what she teaches us (as scientists do) in our journals at the end of each session.”
CCEF’s commitment to raising funds for STEM learning extends beyond elementary school. At Culver City Middle School, students in Ms. Wilke’s STEM elective use 3D printers to design and create functional objects, applying engineering and artistic principles in innovative ways. Meanwhile, high school AP Environmental Science students visit Tanaka Farms, where they observe sustainable farming techniques firsthand, reinforcing classroom lessons on agriculture and environmental science.
With STEM-related careers projected to grow substantially over the next decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics), ensuring students have access to engaging, hands-on STEM experiences is more important than ever. CCEF not only relies on donations from families and community members but also partners with local businesses to expand STEM education across all grade levels. Thanks to support from Hillside Memorial Park & Mortuary, a key CCEF Business Partner, we are able to bring Growing Great to CCUSD classrooms, giving young students early exposure to STEM concepts in a meaningful way.
“The students show such enthusiasm while dissecting seeds, identifying the structures and functions of plants, and discussing themes like germination, pollination and photosynthesis. It is a joy to see their inquisitiveness and confidence grow during our four activity sessions.” – Meghan Nealon, STEM Program Director, GrowingGreat
CCEF is eager to expand Growing Great into additional grades so more students can participate in these valuable learning opportunities. Community support makes these programs possible. To help us “plant the seed” for STEM learning, visit www.ccef4schools.org/donate.
