STEM-tember: Building the Future Through Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math

DSCF2774

September is STEM-tember! All month long, we’re celebrating how Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) programs prepare Culver City students for the future. These opportunities don’t just build technical knowledge – they foster creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills that open doors to college, careers, and lifelong learning.

Thanks to community support, CCEF is powering hands-on STEM programs across every grade level:

  • Elementary Schools: robotics team pilot programs at two schools are giving our youngest learners the chance to code, build, and test their ideas in action. Growing Great workshops bring hands-on science directly into every 2nd grade classroom, sparking curiosity early on. CCEF also ensures transportation for the beloved 5th grade overnight science trip, connecting classroom learning with real-world discovery. And through the annual Mathletes Tournament for 4th–5th graders, students get to experience the excitement of collaborative problem-solving in a friendly competition.
  • Middle School: CCEF has funded start-up equipment for the new Afterschool Robotics Team, creating a space where students can collaborate, problem-solve, and compete while learning essential engineering and programming skills. We also continue to support technology upgrades across campus that make 21st-century learning possible.
  • High School: CCEF provides ongoing support for the High School Robotics Team, which competes at a high level while mentoring younger students in the district. In addition, our funding helps sustain Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways in fields like computer engineering and video game design – programs that connect students’ creativity to real-world career opportunities. Technology investments at CCHS ensure students have the tools they need to succeed in advanced coursework and future studies.

Why does this matter? The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that STEM occupations will grow nearly two times faster than non-STEM jobs in the coming decade, with median earnings that are 67% higher than other careers. By engaging students in STEM early and providing them with a clear pathway from elementary through high school, we’re giving them the confidence and skills to thrive in a competitive, innovation-driven world.

Beyond workforce preparation, research shows that STEM education builds critical thinking, resilience, and collaboration – traits that benefit students in every subject and every stage of life. Whether it’s a 2nd grader discovering the fun of hands-on science, or a high school student designing their own video game, these experiences make learning more engaging and relevant.

Together, these investments create a STEM pathway that grows with our students. And it wouldn’t exist without community support. By funding robotics kits, math enrichment, science experiences, CTE programs, and technology upgrades, you are ensuring that every CCUSD student has the chance to explore, innovate, and discover their potential.

Celebrate STEM-tember with us by learning more about how you can support these programs and keep the pathway strong for Culver City students.
